A Pandemic within a Pandemic — domestic violence during Covid-19
did you know?
How has Mercy Law assisted these victims?
Mercy Law is an independent law centre, registered charity and company limited by guarantee which provides free legal advice and representation to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in the areas of social housing and related social welfare law. MLRC has supported a large number of vulnerable women experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness, many of whom have been victims of domestic violence. While this vulnerable cohort can avail of free legal aid for family law matters, they are not able to avail of free legal aid in relation to housing and homeless matters.
In 2020, MLRC supported and worked in partnership with a number of specialist services and domestic violence refuges including Saoirse’s Women’s Refuge, Bray Women’s Refuge, Wexford Women’s Refuge, Women’s Aid, Aoibhneas, medical social workers at the Coombe maternity hospital and the Rotunda maternity hospital. Unfortunately, the need for Mercy Law’s assistance is ever growing. Recent data confirms the flow of women into homelessness due to family breakdown including domestic violence. Despite this established link, MLRC and other agencies have noted the broad disconnect between domestic violence and homeless services. This is most starkly evidenced in the fact that women residing in domestic violence services are excluded from national statistics on homelessness, despite their urgent housing needs.
